Why headlights go yellow
Modern lenses are polycarbonate with a factory UV coating. That coating breaks down over years of sun and weather, and once it fails, the plastic underneath oxidises. That's the yellow haze.
Wiping the outside does nothing, because the damage is in the plastic. Restoration means removing the failed layer and putting a new protective layer on.
